What it is and what is left
The Praemérita collection brings together prehistoric archaeological material from the Mérida district, from the Palaeolithic to protohistory, including pieces from sites such as the Prado de Lácara dolmen. The Geoemérita collection (Fernández López–Sos Baynat) covers the palaeontology, mineralogy and petrology of Extremadura.
The main space is the sensory interpretation centre Luxuria: the pleasures of Augusta Emerita, which takes the visitor into everyday life in Roman Mérida through a reconstruction of a bath suite, a kitchen with the smells and tastes of Roman cooking, replicas of gladiatorial weapons and a virtual chariot race in the circus. The building also hosts historical re-enactment societies (Emerita Antiqua and Ara Concordiae) and a temporary exhibition room.
During the excavations that preceded its construction (2003–2007), Roman structures, a 2nd-century puticulum and the remains of a medieval maqbara were recorded, confirming continuous occupation of the plot since the early imperial period.
What each period left here
It reads downwards: each band is a period with fabric in this site, newest first, deepest last.

This site has fabric from this period. Mérida has 57 more sites built in the same layer.

Ayuntamiento de MéridaThe centre's «Wall of Wishes» is made of 500 heart-shaped ceramic pieces, each carrying a wish carved by a local resident for the Mérida of the coming decades.
Ayuntamiento de MéridaBelow the deepest layer of each site is the ground itself: what has not been excavated yet, or what left nothing built. The catalogue only claims what is documented.
